Defining Dyslexia: What it is, what it isn’t and how to help

In this four-week course, participants will be introduced to the signs and symptoms of dyslexia and discuss popular myths. We will discuss what dyslexia is, what it isn’t and what the appropriate interventions should include. Participants will be given the opportunity to have in-depth discussions about structured literacy approaches and about the literacy research that supports it for students with dyslexia.

Introduction to Structured Literacy and the Orton-Gillingham Approach

Online Course

This four-week class is an introduction to Structured Literacy and the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach. You will learn the basic tenets of Structured Literacy, examples of multisensory teaching/learning strategies, the history of Orton-Gillingham and why it is important to understand when working with struggling readers.

An Introduction to Structured Word Inquiry (SWI)

Online Course

This six-week class will introduce participants Structured Word Inquiry (SWI). SWI is a process for analyzing and developing an understanding of the underlying structure of the spelling of English words to help a student read and spell words. SWI is instruction that assists all students, those with or without dyslexia. Participants will have multiple opportunities to practice the concepts and strategies they learn.

Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and Fluency

Online Course

In this course participants will learn practical strategies to improve reading comprehension, fluency and vocabulary, as well as the research that supports these strategies. You will be given many opportunities to engage in and discuss simulations. All class chats, class content and discussion boards will be monitored and moderated by the instructors.
