In September 2013, Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley and Tracy Block-Zaretsky presented a webinar designed to educate parents about the special education laws and how the relate specifically to dyslexia. The webinar, sponsored and hosted by Learning Ally, explains the IDEA, IEPs, 504s, accommodations, and more.
You can listen to the audio presentation below or on the Learning Ally site where there are also answers to some of the questions that audience members had during the talk. The presentation PDF, a sample letter, and a guide to abbreviations can also be downloaded for reference.
Education changes everything and, with the right information, parents can be better prepared to advocate for their child.
As a dyslexic screener, tutor, former ‘Reading Recovery’ teacher/leader, college professor and ‘literacy Coach. – it is a real disability Having taken Susan Baron’S. Complete seminar. (Before and after Sessions comes to about 55 hours). It is the best thing I have Ever. Done for children. Every state. Special ed dept. should require it. I have helped over this last year. High school student. A Brilliant. College pre med student. A number of elementRy. All doing. Beautifully. I even have A 70. Year old professor. I cannot say enough as to the magnificent gift Susan Barton has given to children as well as adults.
I am so thrilled to hear someone with your credentials has found and is using the Barton System. I pray every day that more and more teachers will find this program; it worked miracles for our granddaughter. It saddens me that there are so many children who desperately need this, but whose families cannot afford a private tutor. Besides, it should be the duty of the schools to provide an “evidence-based” structured literacy program. The time has come, and way over due, that they need to get their heads out of the sand and realize that just any ole phonics program is NOT going to work for these kids, and that YES DYLEXIA DOES EXIST!
